Integrated Solar Cooking Diffusion in Kenya
Nearly 3 billion people around the world cook on a wood fire, animal waste or charcoal fire, leading to great problems both for nature and human health. Sunlight is a clean energy source that can be used for cooking in a more sustainable way. This method is called solar cooking.
For several years, the organization Asulma Centre Self Help Group has been promoting integrated solar cooking in low-income areas of Nairobi, Kenya. In collaboration with Asulma Centre, we are supporting the education and training of new entrepreneurs that will continue to spread knowledge and implementation of integrated solar cookers in the area.
Before starting this current project, we carried out a pre-study that calculated the impact of transitioning from wood fuel to solar cooking, on families and the environment. We learned that each family using a solar cooker will:
Repay the investment of solar cooking in 4-6 months.
Save around 2 tons of CO2 emission per year.
