For those interested, JAK bank is arranging a seminar on micro financing and its basics. What differs an micro credit from an sms credit? The seminar is held by Mary Obanda, a Phd student at Uppsala University and project coordinator for Ogul Development Group working in rural Kenya.

The seminar starts at 18:00 and ends 19:30 at Norra Liden 11 in Gothenburg.

Since 2008, a successful cooperation has been ongoing between Mavuno Project and Caroline Nielsen, a member of Ingenjörer utan gränser, to construct rainwater harvesting tanks for rural families in Karagwe, Tanzania. Several teams of water tank constructors have been trained by Mavuno Project, and are now employed to perform the construction work. From 2012, the rain water harvesting tank projects are run by Ingenjörer utan gränser together with Mavuno Project.

Karagwe is a mountainous district in northwestern Tanzania. The people live up on the hills, and water is traditionally collected by women and children in natural water sources in the valleys, sometimes very far from where the family lives. The water in the natural sources is often of poor quality, and water related diseases are common. One way of improving the water situation for people is to build rain water harvesting tanks. Rain water falling on the roofs of the houses is lead down to a concrete tank where it is stored for later use.

Each tank constructed within this project is intended to be used by four to five families. A tank will mainly supply the families with water for drinking and cooking, while water for other purposes such as sanitation and personal hygiene still may have to be collected at the natural water source. The benefitting families are involved in the construction work, and collect needed material that can be found locally. Costs for trained constructors and material that needs to be bought in town are covered by external donations, and amounts to 5000 SEK.

Even though I have spent my last weeks on mountains like the one above, I hope you have not missed The Reflecting Engineer lectures held around Sweden this spring! If you somehow have, don't panic there are still many left.

This Thursday, Bo Kjellén a former diplomat and chairman for UN negotiations on desertification and climate change, will visit Chalmers and the Reflecting Engineer. The lecture will be held in the Gustav Dahlén lecture hall and starts 12:00. Mr Kjellén will talk about the role of technology in climate change and society. Be sure not to miss it!

I måndags (den 26:e) hade Ingenjörer utan gränser ännu ett lyckat årsmöte. Verksamhetsberättelse, räkneskaper gicks igenom och medlemmarna kunde sedan enhälligt ge ansvarsfrihet till ordförande, vice ordförande och kassör. Mötet avslutades med önskan om ett nytt aktivt år och följdes av presentationer och diskussioner kring Ingenjörer utan gränsers projekt i Tanzania, Kenya och Tunisien.

Nu drar den populära föreläsningsserien Den Reflekterande Ingenjören igång igen. Här i Göteborg anordnas den av Ingenjörer utan gränser och Chalmers Students for Sustainability. Ingenjörer utan gränser is providing schools in Kenya with computers and we need your help!
Do you have an old but working LAPTOP lurking in the back of a closet?
Why leave it there to collect dust when it could be helping kids in Kenya to a better education.

The 28th of February and 1st of March between 11.00 and 14.00 Ingenjörer utan gränser will be collecting laptops at the Student Union building at Chalmers. Don't hesitate to stop by if you have a spare computer that fulfils the following requirements:

-Laptop
-From year 2000 or newer
-Power cord should be included (but a working battery is not necessary).

If you can’t deliver your laptop on these dates and still want to contribute, please contact us through:

The laptops we collect this time will be sent to a secondary school in Kibera, a slum with 170.000 residents, located inside Nairobi, Kenya.
The school has recently been inaugurated and it's a project enabled by the joint efforts of two NGOs, the Swedish Global Relations (our direct partner) and the Kenyan Wayo Wayo. The school operates according to the Kenyan curriculum and regulations, but pedagogically is inspired by ideas practiced in Swedish schools. You can read more about the project here:
